The birds and the bees...
Yesterday, right before getting in the bath, Sean blurts out that his "patoytoy" is getting bigger and bigger. I just had to laugh. It brought to mind a few months back when he was going #2 on the potty and I hear "up, down, up, down" from the hallway. I peek inside and he is leaning back and forward, back and forward. I bust out laughing! And what a coincidence that the same day, the ultrasound tech captured a shot of Kieran's patoytoy and printed a copy for me.
After the laughter, I get to thinking. It is funny now but years down the road, we are going to have the conversation about the birds and the bees. What a terrifying thought! I actually, never had that conversation with my parents (and could not imagine what it would have been like if I did). I would imagine that a female to female talk would be easier..we have boys, so maybe I can pass on this responsibility to John. Or at least the biological part of it. I think I would like to have some say in the what comes with the territory. Respect (for yourself and the other person), love, affection and responsibility.
My ultimate goal as a parent has always been to raise kind children, in every sense of the word. Everything else can stem from that. They can define success in their own way and I will (try) not to dictate how they reach it. But in the end, if other people can say that my children are kind, then I would have accomplished the goal I set out to achieve.
On a side note, we had a swim date with my friend Carmen and her daughter Alaina a couple of weeks ago. After stripping Sean's swim clothes, he decided that he was not done swimming. Back to the pool steps he went, in his birthday suit. Sorry about that Carmen. Alaina (exactly the same age as Sean, they were born the same day) stared at his patoytoy and you can just see the confusion on her face as she tries to figure out what that thing was. I wish I had my camera, it was so funny! I wonder if Carmen has the same thoughts on the birds and the bees talk...
Oh well, I can take comfort in the fact that I have a lot of time to prepare for that talk...I hope.
